(Kenya) The way to get into Nairobi remains one of hard parts on the trip.

It will take only two or three days to get into Nairobi from the border. While I head to there, I stop at Masai village. Although I’ve heard that Nairobi is the most dangerous city in the east Africa, it seems everything goes well. But then…Just unlucky in front of my destination.. car accident.

Kenya

The visa for Kenya is $50, but it is cheaper to pay in USD. I already exchange all of my Tanzanian money to Kenyan. So, I exchange $50 again from Kenya money to USD. Always the first day in a new country is nervous. As I cross the border, the weather is getting hotter. There is some oasis.

Kenya

I set up tent at some church. A pastor says there is some Korean missionary in Masai village. And he makes phone call to him. Korean missionary says there is something I can help. So the next day I turn back 37 km (23mi) toward the border.

Masai village

But I realize that there is some weird thing. Korean missionary invited me, because he though I am American Korean. But as he met me, he disappointed at which I am original Korean speaker.

Masai village

Anyway he is elder around 70 years old, but he is very famous in Masai village, because he builds school and water pump. Recently he brings electricity to school.

Masai village

There is another Korean missionary, who is different from him that she is very generous and kind. I have fun with her family.

Masai village

I’ve realize that every missionary has different environment.

Some missionary has only little money, but some missionary has more money that they send their children international school, which costs around 1000$ to 2000$ in a month.

Masai village

The woman who hosts me has only a little money, but she doesn’t care about that and always tries to do her best. But she doesn’t care about it and always tries her best. Personally she is more inspired than him, elder man.

Masai village

I want to give some money for her children before leaving, but even she denies it.

Masai village

Although she doesn’t have many things, it looks she already has enough important thing. I really hope that she can find some sponsor for her mission.

Masai village

It is another small village

Sometimes I feel so lucky to com Africa that I can see lots of beautiful birds.

Masai village

I read some reviews about visiting of Masai house in Korean missionary’s house. It seems they were shocked to see it. But in my experience, here is nothing to get shocked, because I am used to seeing it.

Masai village

Although their house was built with poop of cow, they have a cell phone. Some of them can’t understand why I don’t have a phone. Why do I need a phone???

They cook at the inside.

Masai is polygamous. There are five houses. It means one guy has five wives.

Some of tourists are disappointed that Africa is developed than they expect. But in my opinion I thank that they could get out of hard condition which is no water and electricity.

Some people say they want to tour Africa to see the beginning of the earth. But I think they should try themselves the way Africa live like going middle of forest and living without electricity and water. Then they must realize that there is NO FUN! If you can’t live without electricity and water, then other people can feel the same way, because we are the same creature.

Although these days many things are developed, Masai culture is still too behind. They still doΒ female circumcision. And warrior have sex with the girl who was just finished female circumcision. It doesn’t matter how old girl is. Even with only twelve or something…. Β It is so sad.

The day before leaving, local guy, her son and I climb small mount.

It is beautiful sunset.

Kenya

I am on the road again. It is weird that I’ve seen so amazing touristic thing many times on my way. But I can feel amazing even to see just small thing like picture. Maybe I’ve realize that big or small things don’t matter. Only thing matters is nature is just always amazing

Kenyan snack

Some snack I bought at a gas station.

Kenya

As I close Nairobi, I can see a big house. Around 6 pm, I arrive in Nairobi. But Nairobi is so huge that I can’t get into my friend house today. So, I just stop for safety and set up my tent at in front of a police station.

Kenya

The next day I cycle between cars. Although Nairobi is known as dangerous city, I feel okay. There are many big buildings.

Kenya

I got a message about inviting from one friend whom I met in Yellowknife, Cananda. She said she is working as a teacher at the international school in Nairobi. When I almost close to her house, I take some rest on an uphill. Then suddenly one small bus hits my right side of bike and my right elbow. (Kenya’s driver sit is at the right). I am thrown a bit, and my shoe and my bags are thrown far.
I wear groves and helmet that it is okay. But my right elbow is hit by car. It looks a bus driver and other worker don’t feel sorry about it.

It is my THIRD car accident. The first one was in USA and the second was in Peru. But every driver run away after hitting me. But this time they don’t run away. I guess because this is rich area that there are many embassies such as embassy of European countries, Canada, USA and even UN!!

So, this time I call a police. But a police officer is not helpful.

I ask 5000 Ksh (57$) for broken bag. But they said they can only give me 1000 ksh. So I decide to go to a police station together.
Actually the bag is extra one that it is not important. But I want to beat them as the way they beat me because they don’t feel sorry to hit me.
I want to go to a hospital to check as well. I want to ask money for it. But the police officer says I have to leave my bicycle at the police station to get inspected for that. The driver who hit me said I will never see my bike again if I leave it. Although I don’t trust the driver, it sounds true, because I do know Africa now.

I give up getting money for hospital. Anyway later I get 5000 Ksh (57$) for broken bag.

I am worried about my elbow, and I don’t want to cycle for now that I am afraid. I ask the driver who hit me to get a ride to my friend house. He says I have to pay 1500 ksh ($18) for it. Oh… you.. typical…

I ask to the police officer, but he says Kenya is developing country that I must not think I will get much help from them. None of them give me a ride.

I am too disappointed about them. But one guy who heard my story gives me a ride to my friend home. Even he doesn’t ask me money for a ride. It is really weird thing in Africa. There is not much pure help thing in Africa. Many times some people help me only for money.Β He also says to me that I must not leave my bike to be inspected in the police station. Once I leave my bicycle, then I will never see it again, he said.

It is miracle that I didn’t get any serious injured. The only thing matters is I must overcome from the car accident mentally.

In the morning I was upset, but in the afternoon I am so happy to see old friend. Yeah. Anyway life is going on.

  3. Very interesting post!

One trivia question for you. What is the biggest cause of lung cancer around the world? Is it smoking??? No. It is actually indoor home cooking fires! In the mud houses you can see the black soot on the walls,…. and that is exactly what the inside of their lungs look like too.

So many people, just trying to survive, and get by day-to-day.
